Breaking simulation barriers with distributed execution

Engineering design problems span multiple disciplines and rely on computationally intensive solvers. To manage these heavy workloads, ESTECO’s job scheduling technology lets you balance computational loads by executing design evaluations concurrently and distributing solver runs across dedicated HPC and cloud environments.

What is distributed execution?

Distributed execution engines run across a cluster of resources — including networked servers, virtual machines, on prem and cloud HPCs — to deliver large aggregate processing and I/O performance. Our technology is engineered to adapt dynamically to available computational resources, whether they’re multi-core workstations, high-performance computing (HPC) clusters or public cloud environments while ensuring strict security standards are always maintained.

Make the most of your CPU power with modeFRONTIER

modeFRONTIER has built-in capability for managing simulation runs efficiently, allowing you to leverage all available computational resources for efficient design space exploration.

CAD and CAE solvers integrated into simulation workflows require substantial computing power. modeFRONTIER balances these loads by executing design evaluations concurrently while distributing solver runs across HPC and cloud environments further to maximize scalability and efficiency. Also, ESTECO’s proprietary optimization algorithms and schedulers are conceived to scale up, ensuring you get maximum performance from every available CPU core.

How customers use distributed execution

Companies worldwide accelerate their design processes through the smart management of hardware and software resources. Our customers benefit from the distributed execution technology in modeFRONTIER and VOLTA to configure, monitor and manage local and remote computing resources while running simulation and design exploration studies in parallel.

Key challenges in distributed execution

Computing bottlenecks

Design optimization relies on heavy, iterative simulation runs, making hardware availability an implicit bottleneck, especially for smaller operations.

Fragmented hardware infrastructure

Orchestrating and deploying simulation workloads across disparate local workstations, HPC clusters, and cloud environments creates significant IT overhead and operational complexity.

Security and IP protection

Maintaining data security and preserving intellectual property across remote and external execution environments is critical.

Licensing costs

Providing engineering teams with unlimited, scalable computing power makes it difficult to maintain control over software licenses and overall budgets.

Benefits of distributed execution

Accelerate your design processes

Leverage multi-core workstations, HPC clusters and public clouds, while maintaining strict security standards. Our queue system seamlessly distributes tasks on a cluster of networked execution engines to deliver large aggregate processing and I/O performance.

Keep your data in a secure environment

Run MDO studies on distributed infrastructure with VOLTA

Run MDO studies on distributed infrastructure with VOLTA

Leveraging the Player application, VOLTA platform allows your organisation to run parallel executions and manage jobs on local and remote computing resources, HPCs and cloud environments. Your IT department maintains full control over configuring Players and defining user permissions, freeing engineering end users to focus entirely on submitting their jobs. VOLTA seamlessly handles parallelization:

  • multithread parallelization: harnesses multiple cores within a single machine to execute jobs in parallel;
  • distributed parallelization: coordinates multiple Players to run a single execution request.
    Throughout the execution, simulation results stream back to VOLTA as soon they become available. This enables end-users to see DOE, RSM or design optimization progress instantly.

VOLTA microservices architecture: ready for any cloud environment

Companies investing in cloud systems can take full advantage of the VOLTA cloud deployment option in any Kubernetes-compliant environment, centralizing application management and lowering operational costs. The existing standalone option remains available for all those who want to deploy VOLTA as a single application. VOLTA cloud deployment delivers:

  • scalability: handle growing hardware demands without impacting performance or availability;
  • elasticity: automatically scale computing resources based on fluctuating workloads;
  • cloud-agnostic flexibility: compatibility with major public cloud providers — including Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure — as well as private local clouds.

VOLTA tailored cloud deployment

Tailored cloud deployment

VOLTA’s Kubernetes deployment is vendor-agnostic. It can be deployed on-premises, including classified environments or in your private cloud.

Deploying your stack in your own cloud environment ensures your IT team retains complete authority over data, security, and networking. Proprietary data never leaves your environment, eliminating the risk of data leakage. This approach simplifies legacy integration by bridging modern cloud services with local, complex simulation tools that may not yet be cloud-ready.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to questions you may have.

How do VOLTA and modeFRONTIER distribute simulation and optimization runs across workstations, clusters, and cloud resources?

ESTECO simulation workflows can run in parallel across workstation cores, networked machines, enterprise HPCs, and private or public cloud. The platforms handle job decomposition, resource profiling, queue submission, data staging, status handling, and result collection seamlessly.

Does distributed execution speed up a single CAE solver job, or does it mainly run independent simulations in parallel?

ESTECO software primarily scales overall design space exploration by running multiple independent simulations, such as DOE, MDO, or robustness studies, in parallel. Speeding up a single, tightly coupled CAE job depends on that specific solver's built-in support for MPI, GPU acceleration, and domain decomposition. Workflow orchestration manages job scheduling, but it cannot make a single solver run faster than the solver itself allows.

Can VOLTA manage hybrid HPC across on-premises clusters or public and private clouds?

Yes. VOLTA can allocate resources across enterprise HPC and private or public clouds.
It handles hybrid execution by coordinating workload placement rules, user identity and secure networking alongside data staging, egress management, cloud quota limits, job scheduler coordination, and failback behavior.

Can engineers monitor jobs, partial results, failures, logs, and resource usage in real time?

Engineers get full visibility into execution states, log files, resource metrics, and system alerts, with the ability to cancel runs or inspect partial results on the fly. If a job fails, diagnostic logs and completed data remain accessible so you can quickly troubleshoot without losing previous progress.

How does VOLTA handle data transfer, staging, storage, and result collection for remote HPC and cloud jobs?

VOLTA automates the entire data lifecycle for remote and cloud executions behind the scenes.
The platform automatically packages and stages required input files, validates file transfers, and manages both temporary scratch and persistent storage locations on remote execution nodes. As tasks complete, VOLTA safely collects output data, records file locations, and handles automatic retries if a network interruption occurs during transfer.
